The Last Swallow of Summer
by Cindy House
Pastel on paper, 10 1/2″ x 13 1/2″, 2013
Every spring, the Tree Swallows return to nest in the bird boxes we have places out in our field. From my studio window, I can watch and hear as the swallows go about the daily chore of raising a family. All too soon, July comes and suddenly the birds are gone and fields are empty without their aerial acrobatics.
In this painting, my goal was to depict the swallows’ departure, a yearly reminder for me to appreciate the little things in life and one that I all too often forget.
